I loved celebrating Independence day when I was younger. My family was always invited to a BBQ at a friend’s house, and once we got home at about 9pm my sister and I turned on the TV to watch the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks. We often wished we were part of the massive crowds gazing at the beautiful colors that illuminated the sky. Though we never got to be there, I still enjoyed watching it on TV and hear the freedom quotes and songs that played in the background. That half hour of fireworks display, allowed me to understand and appreciate the freedom we enjoy in America. As I got older I would watch it still (alone, I think my sister lost interest in it), and now I allow my boys to watch and admire it as well.
My son just learned a new song at VBS which he has been singing for the past 5 days. “You are, you are, you are my freedom”.. “You are all I need, your love has set us free”! (by Hillsong Young & Free) What perfect timing to incorporate the message of that song with this weekend’s festivities.
Christ’s love has set us free!
One of my favorite set of verses from the bible is actually about freedom.
Here are 4 verses for you to dwell on this weekend, and teach to your children, or even remind yourself about freedom we have in Christ.
John 8:36 (NKJV) Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Galatians 5:1 (NASB) It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
2 Corinthians 3:17 (ESV) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Acts 13:38-39a (ESV) Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him everyone who believes is freed.
As we celebrate this nations freedom, let us also remember because of His Grace, WE ARE FREE!
Here is the song to start off your 4th of July weekend.
